Process Paper
After some time researching online and going through handouts, I chose DIckey Chapelle as my topic. When reading about Dickey, I found her strength and courage inspiring and was able to see her leadership skills and legacy clearly. The little I knew about her career and the fact that her determination to succeed in a world ruled by men made for an interesting topic.
For my research I first searched online through encyclopedias to find background information on Chapelle. Once I had gathered background information, I went to the Wisconsin Historical Society and found examples of her impact for the archives. At the archives, there were many letters to and about DIckey that showed her impact. Also at the archives, were many of the pictures she took in war throughout her career.
I chose to do a website because after experimenting with Weebly, I found it to be and intriguing and entertaining tool. It also allows me to work on my project wherever I have internet access, which is convenient and efficient.
Dickey Chapelle was a leader in her time because she was the first female war photojournalist in many wars. Her work was also the first to document war in action. She went to the front lines to document what no one had documented before. Dickey left behind the legacy of her book, “What’s a Women Doing Here” and opened the field of war photojournalism to women. Her photos and articles changed the way war was viewed in America-rather than being just a place they sent their men, it was real and they could see it.
