Dickey Chapelle was an American war correspondent known for her work from WWII through the Vietnam war. She was born Georgette Louis Meyer on March 14, 1918 in Shorewood, Wisconsin.
Throughout her school career, Chapelle was bullied for her tomboy appearance and love of machinery. Despite constant harassment, she graduated from her high school as valedictorian with the highest grade point average her school had ever seen, winning herself a scholarship to Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After some time at MIT, Chapelle decided she wanted to fly airplanes, a childhood dream of hers. Once a pilot, she made another change and became a war correspondent. She served on the front lines of wars from WWII to the Vietnam War. On November 4, 1965, Dickey Chapelle died and was buried in Forest Home Cemetery in her hometown. |
